This is a miracle dog!  This beautiful shiba inu ingested a bunch of ibuprofen and thanks to quick acting parents who were diligent with her care, this beautiful girl survived and is thriving today!

This shelter’s wardens work with rescues and transporting dogs to safe havens but receive little to zero support from the community.

I’m not sure what he is and I’ve never had a poodle or standard poodle previously so I’m not overly familiar with the breed.  I have three friends who all have standard poodles and I love their standard poodles and thought they were so smart, well behaved and fun.  My poodle dog is almost the opposite of all of those things.  He might be smart but he is very stubborn.  If he doesn’t want to do something, he just sits and looks at me.  He is lots of fun.  He loves to run, romp, play and jump although I haven’t been able to teach him not to jump on me.  He doesn’t like leash walking and I’ve purchased two different products to help … but haven’t had success with either yet.  He also has a horrible habit of putting my hand in his mouth.  I’ve done everything the pet behaviorist has suggested but to no avail!  He does respond to the clicker training and I’m trying to learn how to use it effectively because I feel like it is my hope at this moment.  I also want to take him to a dog training school.  He’s already been to puppy classes where we learned some basics.  Currently, he doesn’t have good manners but we’re working on it.  I’m committed and am working on training this cute adorable dog!

This is a fun and exciting dog event that is taking place in Grove City at Grove City High School.  This is the FIRST time central Ohio is hosting the United Schutzhund Clubs of America’s National Event.

Schutzhund is Germany’s premiere dog sport.  You’ll see some of our country’s best trained dogs.

I’ll am looking for something new to take along on walks with My Poodle Dog! I have been “recycling” the plastic bags in the “wrong way” by utilizing them to be my take along pooper scooper.

Pros: They are being recycled.

Cons: I’m not doing my part to cut down on the usage of plastic bags!

There’s always a lot of controversy about when to neuter a pet. I decided to do it while he was a puppy because recovery time is a lot quicker and it is better for his health since I didn’t plan to breed him. After seeing how quickly he has recovered and how difficult it is to keep him from running and jumping, I know I made the right decision.

Bouncing to a new subject, I just heard that a Prairie Home Companion Summer Love 2010 tour will be happening. I am so excited and hope to get to attend a show. After being a fan for many years and only listening on the radio, I had the privilege of seeing the Prairie Home Companion show at the Ohio State Fair a few years ago. It was a great time and a great show. If Garrison Keillor and the Prairie Home Companion Summer Love 2010 tour comes to a city near you, it’s a great show you’ll want to attend!

Introducing Tedd

I don’t remember “PUPPYHOOD” being as difficult as it is this time.  It’s been nearly two decades since I’ve raised a puppy!!!  Maybe it is that I’m a little less patient this time. 

We love the KONG toys!!!  They are our absolute favorite.

We’re also doing CLICKER training.  It has made a big difference and has really helped.

We are doing the BELL on the door for potty time.

He’s been to the VETERINARIAN and had all of his vaccines.  He is scheduled to be neutered soon!

He loves his BLUE BUFFALO PUPPY FOOD!!!

We are trying to decide if I’m going to buy the grooming supplies and groom him at home or if we’re going to send him to a groomer on a regular basis.   I’m also considering putting him in doggy day care a couple of days each week.  We’re also looking into Pet Insurance!

He’s going to Puppy School and will someday be a great dog.  I have dreams of him becoming a therapy dog or an agility dog or maybe … both!

We’ll share our adventures and look forward to loving Tedd forever!

Ned playing in the snow!

Our 13 year old pointer-collie is now on four medications because he shows signs of pain with his arthritis, muscle loss and failing hips.

He is on Cosequin which I pull apart and mix into his food. He is also on Deramaxx which he takes as a treat. He gets one Tramadol at bedtime which seems to help keep him comfortable through the night.

We are having routine bloodwork done on him. He has one slightly elevated liver value and everything else is normal. I have purchased a liver supplement and we are trying to give it to him once daily. It needs to be given 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal and I’m struggling to get it in him properly everyday! I am hopeful it will help keep his liver a little safer since he’s taking the nsaid daily. Thankfully, he is on the low end of the dose currently.

It is so difficult to see him age. He’s always been such a happy and playful dog. It is hard to see him have a bad day, struggle to get up and down, fall and to be grumpy!

I recently heard about someone who purchased a specific breed of a dog for $3,500.00. I hope this family will love this adorable creature that God made and take incredible care of it.

I personally would never even consider purchasing a dog for $3,500.00. However, I would gladly spend $3,500.00 on my dog. I buy high quality food for him. I buy healthy snacks and treats for him. I buy him toys, beds and blankets. He has shampoo, a doggie bag, travel gear and at least two visits to the veterinarian each year – just for wellness! If he were ill, I’d do everything possible for him and he’s a mutt. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on him over his 12 years of life although I didn’t pay anything for him.

I just have to wonder, how much would a person who spends $3,500 to purchase a dog really spend on that dog each week? What do they feed him? I think my dog is pampered … and only can imagine what a family who spends this amount of money to purchase “Fido” must invest into their dogs’ life! What would their limit be if he were ill?

Today, she was sleeping on the deck when I took “Nedd” outside this morning. She is very friendly and thankfully, she and Nedd get along well.

Today, she has a BURN mark on her neck and was not wearing the collar. She also cowered when I tried to pet her head. She also has some unusual marks on her legs which could be from her trotting through brush, weeds … and fences; even barbwire fences.

I would love to contact her owners and ask if they are wanting to get rid of her. I am curious if they’ve just turned her loose at this point. I haven’t seen them make any efforts to find her. She’s gone now and I find myself worried about her and wishing I could provide her a home.

I don’t feel like I can give her a good home at this point. I also don’t even know if they are ready to give her up. I do believe they are not happy with her. She’s a very different breed than they’ve had previously and I’m not sure they’re ready for her.

I am already in love with her. I could give her a home. I’m not in a position to be taking on another dog with so much on the “burners” right now!!! I am grieving over her and praying she is okay.

I’ve already named her “LUCY”. (I’m in trouble!) After Manda passed in November, I said … “my next dog will find me”.

I have explained a few of the many benefits of spaying to her.  My friend is a cancer survivor herself so she seems to understand the surgery would be best for her doggy!

She is going to take a tour of the vet hospital next month, meet the doctors and consider scheduling the procedure.  I wish I could calm her fears.  There’s risk involved with any surgery so there’s not a guarantee to give her that her dog will do just fine although there’s no known or seen reason why a young dog would have a problem.

If you have any ideas for me to pass on to her, please let me know!

She’s shy until you speak to her and then she’s very friendly. I would guess her at being less than one year old. I found her owners and returned her home the 1st Sunday she visited.

She is messy, sweet, gentle and goofy! She bounces through mud puddles. She needs to touch me with her paw and it really doesn’t seem like a dominance issue.

Her owners are keeping her outdoors in a large dog run until they can get her more properly trained. They have also fenced the yard with the Invisible Fence. Somehow, this large dog decides she can get out of her Invisible Fence yard but then is afraid to go back into it.

My “pom” who is in heaven “trained” my other dogs. Our greyhound would run under the kitchen table if she scolded him about something. Our “Nedd”, a German Short Hair Pointer and Collie mix PRANCES as he walks. He will stand on the sidewalk to go potty holding his body over the grass to avoid getting wet or dirty!

I enjoy the visits from this goofy girl. I really like her and am falling in love! Her owners are use to a different breed and this is their first experience with a bloodhound. I hope it works out for them but if it doesn’t, I’d find a way to welcome her into our lives although I cannot imagine welcoming this drooling dog into my home and I cannot imagine keeping a dog outside!

At this point, we are able to treat his arthritis with Cosequin.  He took a large dose for about a month and now he’s on a maintenance dose of one tablet in the morning and one tablet at night.  He thinks it is a treat so getting it in him twice daily is not a problem.

In the last few months, I have noticed him having more difficulty with stairs.  I have noticed him getting off the bed slower.  I notice him choosing to sleep on his dog bed more and more often instead of climbing into the bed with us which he’s always done!

Nedd has always been the most gentle large dog.  He’s fun, goofy and very playful.  In the last year, there’s been a few occasions, and last night was one of them, where he suddenly becomes grumpy.   He was laying in bed with us and we had been loving on him, massaging him, rubbing his ears and his belly and all the sudden he showed his teeth!  I have no idea what happened.  It was strange.  I am trying to contribute it to possible pain in his neck or back and the fact that his Cosequin was about two hours “late” last night.

He acts perfectly fine today.  He is running, playing, happy and enjoyed his breakfast.  I brushed him thoroughly today trying to see if there was a painful spot but he even enjoyed being brushed!

I feel like a terrible pet parent right now.  I didn’t even know he had swallowed it!!!  I buy these particular dental chews at the vet hospital because they are of a good quality and are a food product.  They really do help his teeth.  I’ve purchased these for about 3 years and we’ve never had this problem previously!

I’m a little frightened right now.  This is a treat he really enjoys and he has one about every other day.

He acts perfectly fine now.  I gave him a late breakfast and he’s still doing fine.  I didn’t call the veterinarian … at least not yet.  If he vomits again, I’ll be calling very quickly.  I try not to call over every little thing while at the same time not overlooking a health concern.

I’ve never met a dog I didn’t like.  I don’t believe there’s such a thing as a bad dog.  If the dog is acting up, I believe it is the dogs’ humans who haven’t helped the dog learn!  I’m sure there’s exceptions to this as there is with everything … but typically, there’s no bad dogs!

I’ve seen giant dogs be gently giants.  I’ve seen what some call stubborn dogs listen better than a child.  I’ve seen a PIT BULL be bossed around by my 10# pom!  The PIT BULL would run under the deck when the POM barked.  The PIT BULL would also let my POM hold its leash and lead it around the yard.

I wouldn’t turn my pom loose with just an pit bull … this was a friends dog … and I knew how it was being raised and trained.  I knew it was a gently dog with good manners!

It doesn’t matter what the breed is or even if it is a “mutt”, I love each and every DOG that God created! 

DOGS REIGN!

Thankfully, I didn’t get rid of his favorite chair.  He’s loves it and is now spending even more time in his favorite chair!  We’ve wanted to find a new home for this old chair for a long time.  We keep hanging onto it because Nedd loves it!  He fits in it so perfectly.  It’s his favorite seat in the house.

She was diagnosed with “heart disease” several years ago. She had a heart murmur for many years which us unsymptomatic so she didn’t have any treatment for it. However, I always kept her on a healthy diet, knowing that a heart problem was impending.

After our greyhound, Russ passed away from cancer, Manda, our pomeranian started having health problems. Her heart murmur got worse. Within six months after his passing, Manda had to start medication for heart disease.  It was my first experience with seeing a dog grieve over the loss of another dog.  She really missed him and it harmed her health.

I don’t remember the exact date but I remember the signs, symptoms and being at the veterinarian as Manda was diagnosed with renal failure or kidney disease. (I hear the terms used interchangeably.) We began more medications. Life was managed with “pee pads”, gates, nice kennel type play pens and lots of love.

She had given so much to me for so many years. I couldn’t turn my back on her now in her time of weakness and need. During the last month of life, we managed although I could tell the quality of life was declining. Manda never did “doggy things” anymore. She just wanted to sleep. She didn’t seem comfortable even with high doses of about 10 different medications which were given around the clock. She was high maintenance by this time and a special needs dog but I never begrudged a single moment spent taking care of her and I never begrudged a single penny spent on her.

A couple of months earlier, started this little “shiver” thing. She would do it as I took her outside. She would do it when I took her to the vet. She would do it when company was at our home. I assumed she was scared because she was blind and deaf by this time.

On Manda’s last day, we were at the veterinarian because it was obvious to me that she was doing worse and medicine wasn’t managing her pain. After diagnostic testing, it was revealed to me that Manda had a tumor in her neck the size of my thumb. She also had kidney stones and even more arthritis was visible. Her trachea was also collapsing more.

Afterwards, I believe the “shivering” was from pain from the tumor in her neck. It’s just my opinion. The times she would “shiver” seem to be when I was lifting her or putting her down. I’m not sure I should of assumed she was simply frightened.

Afterwards, I got to thinking about those last couple of tough weeks. I took her to the vet asking if they could tell she was really doing worse. I just needed someone else to be able to see what I was witnessing. The testing showed that she really was doing worse. My bubbly demanding little dog was not the same little dog.

I remember many years ago when the veterinarian found the heart murmur. I was told at that time dogs can live a long time with heart disease and that it could be something else that takes Manda. That veterinarian was right, Manda didn’t die of heart disease. We managed it. She didn’t die of kidney disease. We managed it. She died because she had a myriad of health conditions including arthritis, a collapsing trachea, kidney disease, heart disease … and then the kidney stones and tumor in her neck.

After my loss of Manda, I suddenly had two free hours each and every day. I never realized just how much time I spent care giving until she was gone.

I miss my little dog so much! She was always under my feet. There are still mornings I wake up and move carefully because I’m expecting my tiny dog to be somewhere. Losing my dog has been very difficult.

Currently, we have about 14″ of snow and lots of drifts.  Nedd has been out three times today.  He doesn’t go out unless someone goes out with him.  A path was shoveled across the deck for him.  Steps were shoveled and salted for him.  I even bundle up and go outside with him, of course, with camera in hand!  He really has us trained!  He plays a little, runs around for a couple of minutes, does his business and is ready to get back in the warmth of our home!

We dry him off, dry his feet and we don’t force him to spend more time outside than he wants to.  He is a German Shorthair Pointer and Collie special blend.  His time limit seems to be less than 10 minutes at a time.

We especially love enjoying the winter wonderland from the warmth of being inside!

We had a wonderful pet sitter for years.  She came to our house.  She would even take our dogs to her home.  She took excellent care of our dogs and we were comfortable leaving them.  Over the years, she has finally quit pet sitting.  I sure do miss the great service she gave and the comfort level I was able to have with her.

I’m thankful that my parents now keep Nedd from time to time.  I know they love him.  I know they take good care of him.  I know he loves them and he enjoys spending time with them.  I am comfortable leaving him and that makes going away easier.  They do spoil him … but that’s what grandparents are supposed to do.

It seems that no matter how much I know he is in good hands, I still miss him and wish we could have taken him along.

Nedd has his own travel bag full of necessary items, such as his Cosequin as well as dental treats, healthy treats, his brush and his toothbrush and poultry flavored toothpaste. One evening, Nedd was knocking at his bag with his foot. The folks we were staying with were amazed at Nedd’s personality and wanted to watch. I went to Nedd and started going through our nightly ritual. I brushed his hair, gave him his Cosequin and a treat.

I then proceeded to get his toothbrush out and his toothpaste. The folks we were staying with couldn’t believe Nedd sat so proud while I brushed his teeth. They couldn’t believe how much Nedd enjoyed it.

I learned the hard way! I had a pom whose teeth I didn’t take care of because I started to try when she was five years old and after she had to have a dental. It was too late. She hated it and I never got to brush her teeth. She refused dental treats. She had numerous dentals in her lifetime. She passed away in November 2007 at the age of 18 with only seven teeth left.

Nedd is twelve years old, has some tartar, has some wear on his teeth from being a power chewer but has never had the need for a dental from a veterinarian.

Today, he started off his day as usual with breakfast and playing outside. He spent quiet a bit of time outside sniffing despite the 5 degree temperature.

He played ball, took a nap and just had lunch. This time when we were out, I discovered WHY he was in such a sniffing mood. He is a German Short Hair Pointer and Collie Special Blend … so some sniffing is always expected. This time, he was really being curious about something.

We soon seen a CAT! Nedd thinks they are playmates but most cats usually don’t want to play with him … until they get to know him.

Nedd is napping again while I’m doing laundry. We’ll see what the rest of the day has for Nedd to do and discover.

There were many hotels that were welcoming to our 55# dog. We are pleasantly surprised at the number of places in the DC area where we could take our dog!

My hubby is a comedian and we travel a lot. The website: www.DogFriendly.com is a big help as we travel from coast to coast.

Thankfully, Nedd used great manners during the entire trip!

Nedd has several nicknames including: “Nedd, the atomic party puppy”. At the age of 12, he begins each day with a favorite Kong toy in his mouth. He barks very loudly and still plays very hard.

He has a little bit of arthritis which he takes a daily dose of Cosequin which seems to help keep in under control safely.

We also feed Nedd the best diet we’ve found, Blue Buffalo Senior Lamb & Rice! And, he had the best veterinary care available.

He’s a great buddy, especially to my hubby, Christian Comedian MartyDaniels. Nedd shows us unending loyalty and devotion. He’s truly a best friend.

She still asked for food but ate it a lot slower. She still greeted me when I woke her up. She was always happy to know I was nearby. She handled not seeing or hearing so well that most people wouldn’t realize she had any difficulty with either.

I optimistically called the veterinarian and made her an appointment telling them “she’s doing worse”. Her veterinarians, Dr Elizabeth Lauron and Dr Gale Kerr and their staff have provided excellent care for Manda for many years. I left the house alone with Manda saying we’ll be back soon.

I have utmost confidence in them. I had every belief that we could just add more medicine to her regiment of already taking 7 different medications three times daily. Dr Kerr seen Manda on this day and an examination and testing revealed that in addition to renal failure, congestive heart failure, and a collapsing trachea, Manda now had kidney stones, one of which was in her urethrea and a mass on her neck which was the size of my thumb. The mass was not visible to the eye or when touching her neck. It was obviously causing her problems though.

After seeing the results, I called my husband and he joined me at the vet’s office. We had to send Manda to heaven where she’ll get to run and play with our greyhound Russ who went to heaven in 2003. We had 18 great years with Manda and are thankful God sent her to us to love. She added so much to our lives and we miss her terribly.

This happened on November 22, 2007. My husband is a stand up comedian and he had a show that night. We had planned for friends to join us at the show and we had made plans to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with them. They are great friends and they offered comfort, love, support and didn’t judge me when I excused myself and went to bed while they stayed awake with great conversations until the early morning hours.

The veterinarians and their staff sent us a beautiful arrangement of flowers which lasted through the holiday seasons. The funeral home even called us. The urn is done beautifully.

I’m so thankful that I got to hold Manda during the euthanasia. She wasn’t scared or stressed. I am grateful that she went peacefully without struggle.

I miss her so much. She’s been my faithful little companion for many years. I miss her demanding yet loving attitude. I never begrudged a dime that I spent on her nor a moment that I spent with her or caring for her. After she was gone, I suddenly had two extra hours in each day. I didn’t even realize her care was taking any amount of time.

Nedd is doing well. He has missed her and is adjusting. He is 12 and this is his first experience being the only dog in the house!

She still greets me at the door, recognizes people and pets she knows, wags her little tail, loves to eat and loves to be with her human family. As an old dog, she no longer tolerates nail trims or being brushed even though she use to enjoy being groomed when she was younger.

I cherish my time with her. She thinks taking her seven medicines every day is a treat! She spins in circles as I prepare her meds two or three times daily. I admire her attitude and spunk! What a life lesson!

She has a great attitude. She is still as demanding as she was when she was young. She no longer tolerates being brushed or having her nails done; which never was a problem until the last few years. She doesn’t see very well and will walk into things occasionally. She doesn’t hear very well and no longer hears the tone of my voice.

I still try to spend time with her. I no longer take her places unless I am traveling overnight. She doesn’t enjoy it like she use to. She doesn’t mind the hotel stays as long as she has her mesh kennel. She doesn’t like to be picked up or held any more. She doesn’t want to sit and watch Letterman with me at the end of our days as we use to. Instead, she lays on her own doggy bed next to my chair. She no longer jumps on and off the bed; instead, she sleeps near me on her own blanket. She no longer plays and doesn’t seem to enjoy a walk anymore. While I try to spend quality time with her, basically, it consists of sitting on the floor or ground with her and gently petting her. Her little tail wags as I tell her how much I love her and that she is beautiful. That seems to be the extent of our quality time together at this point.

During the last few months, she has really bonded with my husband. They always liked each other, but now, there’s a new bond. I am the one that forces meds down, gives subq fluids, cleans her body even when she doesn’t want it done and he’s the one who only offers her gentle touches and food! It’s been hard to see but I’m glad they’ve bonded.

When she is left alone, she waits by one of our desks, knowing that when we come in, the computer is one of our usual first stops! She patiently waits under the computer desk. I’ve moved a doggy bed into the office to help keep her comfortable.

“Trouble” is a beautiful white Maltese who will receive the best of everything for life and will someday be buried beside Ms. Helmsey and her late husband, Harry.

It was reported that her brother will receive 10 million and will have the privilege of continuing to provide “Trouble” with a pampered lifestyle; two grandchildren will receive 5 million only if they visit their late father’s grave at least once a year and the other two grandchildren were excluded due to reasons which are known to them.

Okay, from what I’ve heard, it sounds like she really earned her title of “Queen of Mean”. I have to wonder though, was it survival? Did she experience a grand failure of mankind to drive her to the point of leaving a trust of 12 million to her beloved dog?

In February 2006, Manda had to begin medicine to treat her heart murmur and heart disease. Today, her heart murmur is a 5/6 on one side and a 4/6 on the other side.

In March 2007, Manda was diagnosed with renal failure and began medications immediately.

Today, she is 17 1/2 years old and I’m wondering how long a dog can live with heart disease and how long a dog can live with renal failure? The treatment for either one makes the other one worse. So, as I’m helping her heart, I’m hurting her kidneys. As I’m helping her kidneys, I’m hurting her heart. It’s tough!

This week, she’s restless and I seem unable to help her find contentment. Most of her medications have been increased to every 8 hours. She has diarrhea at least once daily and a normal bm at least once daily. Her “tummy” is in bad shape and she’s on two medications to help her tummy tolerate the medications. She’s urinating more often and not always able to make it outside or to her “pee pad”. The thing that is really concerning me this week is the PANTING. She’s panting even at rest.

My husband thinks she’s lost weight. She still has a beautiful and fluffy coat so it’s hard to tell if she’s really losing weight or not. She doesn’t need to and has already dropped from 12# to 10# since first beginning treatment.

She also has arthritis. She’s on a total of nine medications. With all of that, she’s still bright and alert. Her poor eyesight and poor hearing doesn’t stop her or slow her down very much. She gets around the house perfectly and only walks into something if I leave something where it doesn’t belong. She still seems happy. She is still demanding for food and attention. She doesn’t cough very often as long as she has her medications. She doesn’t let me hold her anymore, brush her anymore or trim her nails; all of which she use to actually enjoy.

I already miss holding her and cuddling her. I miss carrying her throughout the house while doing chores. I miss her sitting with me to watch tv.

It’s so hard to watch her decline. We’re going to the veterinarian tomorrow for an exam, check her weight and possibly more bloodwork.

We’ve taken him to the veterinarian twice for this problem. Since he is a senior citizen and a 55# dog, we had a senior wellness workup done for him. His bloodwork and urine was normal. He had a few days of a muscle relaxer and Rimadyl. He responded well and was back to normal very quickly. A couple weeks later, the same stiffness came back. We treated it the same only this time, after the Rimadyl, we began a daily regiment of Cosequin only.

Now, a few weeks later, it’s back again. I’m looking at options. I’ve heard so many negative things about Rimadyl that I’m afraid to use it on a long term basis as a maintenance drug. I’ve increased his Cosequin since there’s varying doses on the back of the bottle. I’m hoping that helps.

I am researching adding fatty acid tablets and special diets. I’m also reading about some other supplements, holistic treatments, natural dog care and even acupuncture that folks have told me work well for arthritis in dogs.

It sure is hard to see this great dog age! He’s the smartest dog and just lives to love and play.

He’s typically daddy’s boy…until he doesn’t feel well and then he only wants me! It’s really a neat experience to see our dog suddenly become my boy and only want comforted by me when he is feeling ill. I didn’t realize a dog would react the same way that a child typically d0es when ill.

We’ve always said Nedd is almost human and is our son. I guess he’s proving us right!

I am praying she isn’t suffering. I’m not always sure as the last few days have been really rough. She has had continuing loose stool which is caused from a “bad gut”. She has been up nearly every night with a coughing/wheezing episode. She is panting more and more.

Her medicines are increased and we’re moving toward every 8 hours instead of every 12 hours with the veterinarians advice.

She is currently on Tramadol, Benazapril, Aluminum Hydroxide, Sulcrafate, Sub q fluids every other day, Furosemide, Famotidine, Hydrocodone and Pet Tinic. She thinks she is getting treats because most of the meds are hidden in something yummy. I don’t administer the subq fluids as I should because she runs and hides which makes it really hard for me to do. She doesn’t like the sulcrafate slury but I give her the pet tinic afterwards so she tolerates it pretty well.

She can’t hear or see. She still greets me with a wagging tail. She spins in circles as I prepare her food. She still barks and is demanding. She uses pee pads as she can’t always wait on someone to be able to take her out. She is still bright and alert.

I keep praying she’ll pass in her sleep someday. It is so hard to watch her body fail.

My 17 year old dog is now on eight medications every day. She doesn’t tolerate the heat at all. She spends most of her time indoors. We now have to purchase “doggy pads” because she can’t hold it very long.

She has heart failure and renal failure. She can’t see very well and can’t hear very well.

She still gets up every morning with great attitude and tail wagging as she gets our her few morning coughs. She spins and jumps as her food bowl is filled despite her arthritis. She gets very excited as I prepare her medicines several times each day and views most of the medicines as special doggy treats.

This phase of her life is different. She requires a lot more “care” than she use to. She no longer enjoys being brushed and hates having her nails done. Both of which she never minded until the last few years.

She’s worth every bit of time and effort. I already miss the girl she use to be but I love her all the same. I dread the day that she’s no longer with me.

Caring for our geriatric pets takes a lot more time, effort, money and energy. They’ve dedicated their entire lives to us and rarely asked for anything. I feel I owe it to her to give her the best possible life I can even until the very end.

I’ve had to make the toughest decision of my life once, two years ago. I understand that sometimes it is necessary and the best thing we can do and the last thing we can do for them is to have the veterinarian help us send our pet to heaven.

Have you seen some of the new boarding facilities for dogs? They are like luxury hotels! They are wonderful. I can’t wait until there’s one near me. I’m sure I’d feel much more comfortable leaving my dogs knowing they were not in a cage.

These state of the art facilities have play times, grooming times, cuddle times and sleep time. They have TV’s playing upbeat cartoons, soothing jazz music, beds, pillows, toys and nearly all the comforts of home. The only thing missing is “mommy and daddy”!

It’s a question I often wish I could answer. Nedd wakes up happy every single morning. He is the happiest and most playful dog I have ever met. Russ was the opposite. He woke up slowly. He preferred to sleep late, eat breakfast, have a leisurely walk and then a nap. Manda lets us know each and every day that we are fortunate to be part of her world.

I will hear my husband ask the dogs “What are you thinking?”; usually when they are making a bad choice such as getting into the trash, counter surfing or selecting items in the house to claim as their own toys.

I’ve had the pleasure of loving four dogs and I’ve seen many different characteristics in each of them.

Intelligence:
Can problem solve – can retrieve a toy despite a barrier; can find an exit despite an obstacle
Entertains himself/herself

In my experiences, NEDD is the most INTELLIGENT dog in our family. He can problem solve, entertains himself and is very sensitive to moods, comprehends a lot of conversations even when not directed toward him and he’s always alert and curious. Manda comprehends words directed toward her and is alert and curious. Russ was quick to evaluate moods, was alert and curious and comprehended words directed toward him.

MANDA is our most independent dog in the family. She has her own plan all the time and we are just part of it or either in her way. She wants affection and grooming only on her terms. She’s happy with us but needs her alone time too. She ignores being scolded! Nedd can’t stand to be alone, loves grooming and affection, lives for us and wants to make up quickly if scolded. Russ hated being scolded, couldn’t stand to be alone and was incredibly affectionate and would let you brush him for hours. He never had his own agenda.

MANDA is the most determined dog in our family. She is obsessive with good and bad things such as playing, getting into the laundry or licking! She doesn’t forget what she wanted and works hard to get her own way. Nedd forgets what he was doing easily and is only obsessive when playing with his toys. Russ worked on getting his own way only when wanting more loving!

MANDA is our most dominant dog. She rules the house and always kept the big dogs in line. Russ would guard his territory when he felt threatened. Most people think Nedd is dominant because of his appearance!

NEDD is our high energy dog! He is always ready to start his day at the moment anyone’s eyes open. He grabs his favorite toy for the day and starts running, barking and playing. He doesn’t require much sleep and will ask you to wake up when he’s had enough sleep. We enjoy his energy level. Russ was our “couch potato”, a retired racing greyhound. Manda plays but nothing like Nedd!

NEDD is always sniffing the air, ground and our feet. He wants to know what’s going on, what has been going on and never wants to miss out on anything. He “kills” each and every stuffed animal. He chases rabbits but stops on command so he’s never caught one! We trained him to not bite our feet or that would be a fun game of his too.

We all need to think about each dogs characteristics and what they can add to our lives and which ones we will appreciate instead of finding annoying!

As I am care-taking Manda, my 17 year old Pom who has had our hearts since she entered this world, I am reminded of this book. We have been through so much together over the last 17 years! As you’ve read in previous blogs about my dogs, they are a huge part of our lives and bring me much joy.

Manda shows so much love and dedication to me, how could I even consider turning my back on her now? While she is so ill, she is still bright and alert. She still runs to greet me with a wagging tail and kisses. She still spins in circles with excitement.

Is it a lot of work? Is it inconvenient? Is it worth it? Is it keeping her from suffering? Yes to all of the above. She will begin at home “sub-q” treatments next week.

Is she going to get better? Is it an investment that is going to offer financial returns? No to both. We have no idea how many days, weeks or even months she may be with us. We want each and everyday that she has left to be as good as possible.

Manda had bloodwork done this week. She has been receiving treatment for over 1 year for her heart and trachea. Now, she is in full blown kidney failure and she is anemic along with being in heart failure. The meds to treat either the heart or the kidneys work against each other and the other organ involved. We are simply doing the best we can for our dog who has given so much to us over the years.

It’s not that I have tons of money and it is easy to just spend money on her. It is a sacrifice that we are willing to make because it needs done.

I feel God gave me this little creature and it is my responsibility to take care of her in the best way possible. That doesn’t mean I ignore signs and symptoms allowing her to suffer, wishing the problem would go away and wait on her to die. That doesn’t mean I go to all possible life saving and trial measures such as transplants.

The veterinarian cried with me at the clinic and over the phone with results. I’m a major animal lover. I’m one of those who doesn’t even kill a fly or spider that gets in the house. I catch them and put them back outside. I cried when a opossum ran out in front of the car and my hubby couldn’t miss it. I really wonder where I came from sometimes. I have no idea where or how I developed such a love for animals. I didn’t grow up with animals lovers but at a young age I began rescuing animals! For some reason, God made me this way!

I hope I can have the courage necessary to continue taking care of her in the best way possible. I find myself trying to touch her more, look at her more and enjoy our last times together even more.

I’m ALMOST one of “those” pet people! I’m so thankful God created these special creatures which add so much joy and companionship to my life.

I was told ONE YEAR ago that my beautiful little dog, MANDA didn’t have much time left. At that time, she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and depression (over her best buddy, Russ passing away). We went through a series of medications to find a balance.

Her diagnosis has worsened in the last 12 months. She now has an enlarged heart, collapsing trachea and her liver, kidney and potassium levels have changed. She now has arthritis too. She has even made me a believer of the effectiveness of acupuncture!

Manda has a great attitude. She gets up everyday DEMANDING breakfast. She eats three or four meals everyday. She still loves to go outside and go for a walk. She now has to stay on a leash because her eyesight is so terrible.

She has to be carried up and down steps because of her eyesight and because of her arthritis. She patiently waits to be picked up.

Instead of sleeping on the bed with us, she sleeps on her own special pillows beside the bed. Manda still surprises us occasionally by jumping on the bed to say goodnight.

She is now on medication every 8 hours around the clock. She thinks it is a treat and is so excited as I’m opening medicine bottles and hiding the pills in a bite of something yummy.

Manda sleeps more than she did when she was younger. She has a lot more white than she use to and she still holds onto being the alpha dog in the home.

She doesn’t like to be groomed anymore. It’s a battle we only tackle when necessary.

Manda still runs and greets me when I walk in the room. She gets so excited that it usually results in a coughing episode.

She doesn’t hear very well but doesn’t let it stand in her way. She still spins in circles. Her tail still wags.

Manda traveled with us over the Christmas holiday and she still enjoyed it. It was amazing to see her enjoy being with us just like she’s done all of her life.

I believe my 16 ½ year old dog is aging gracefully. I believe she is happy. I believe she is not in pain or suffering. I understand and am accepting her health is declining.

She still has a job to do. She’s still part of our little family. We give her the best nutrition and diet possible. There’s a lot of great foods on the market and a lot of terrible foods on the market. We feed Blue Buffalo Dog Food. It has nutrients in it that helps fight toxins and is packed full of quality ingredients.

Manda needs more care than she use to need when she was younger. Manda is loved and I believe she knows she is loved. I expected her to pass a long time ago and am thankful she’s still around!
After all the years she has loved me and served me, it’s my turn to be sure to give her plenty of respect and love. I try not to leave her out. I try to make sure Manda knows she is needed and loved and valued as part of our little family!

Can you imagine having that many things wrong with you and still having a good attitude, being happy and loving? She could have a lot of reasons to stay in bed, give up or be grumpy!

Marty & I make time to watch 24 nearly every MONDAY night. We’re looking forward to the 2 hour special which is right around the corner.

Ned, our pointer collie mix hates the show. He can’t lay in his bed like he normally would do when we watch something. He paces the floor until we get tired of seeing him pace and tell him to go to bed. At that time, he goes to the bedroom and covers up in bed. Yes, he actually covers up!

I wonder if Ned has any idea how much he has it made. He’s one lucky dog. He’s treated very well. For the last few years, I’ve found and been feeding him food that is full of quality ingredients and nutrients. He lives inside with us. He does his outdoor business really quick on cold days like we’ve had this week. He’s treated better than some people treat their kids. He actually listens and has better manners than some kids I’ve met.

There’s been stories on the news this week about dogs dying because they’re left outside with no shelter. There’s been humane society workers rescuing dogs and saving them from a painful death. The shelters are now overflowing with dogs. These dogs are in need of a home where the new “pet parent” has the time, energy and money necessary.

It takes as much time as you’re willing to give. Bringing a dog into your life is a big deal. It’s a lifetime commitment. It takes energy even when you don’t have any to give. It takes some money. They have needs just like you and I. They never ask for brand name anything and I believe their needs are fairly basic.

I grew up with dogs not being permitted in the house. My dog had a nice wooden structure called a dog house outside. She also was given HAY in her house in the winter time. This HAY was changed frequently so it was always dry for her. Her dog house even had a little flap hanging over the entrance to keep the elements from blowing in and making her wet and cold. She was provided shelter.

I can remember begging my parents to let me bring my dog inside when I’d see these horrible weather reports on the news. On occasion, they’d let me bring her into the utility room/mud room/back porch just for the overnight hours. The funniest thing is….the dog was so happy when daylight came and she got to run back outside into the cold!

We all have different opinions and styles of taking care of and loving our pets. As long as it is done, that’s all that matters!

I can’t believe the stories I’ve seen of dogs just roaming on a chain or roaming in a fenced backyard with absolutely no shelter. They lay on the cold ground, lay on a concrete porch and their water buckets are frozen.

These are animals that God made. I believe it is our responsibility to care for them. I also believe they are a wonderful gift that God has given us!!!

She said loudly across the room to her co-workers and the pharmacist “she’s buying “blah blah blah” for a dog”. The staff all laughed. The pharmacist laughed and said “you’ll want to keep it near a door”. My heart sank as everyone had a rude laugh. I was fighting back tears and decided to just laugh with them instead of crying.

How can someone be so insensitive? I obviously love my pet if I’m going to spend money purchasing meds for her. I believe it is my responsibility to care for the creatures God has put in my life. He created them. Would He want any less for His creations? My pets have been through a lot with me. They’ve been loyal companions all of their lives. How could I turn my back on them when they need me the most?

“blah blah blah” represents a big long name that I can’t pronounce or spell. We’ve have difficulty finding meds that my little dog can tolerate. This specific pill is over $1.00 per pill. For those who are great at math, I paid $10.98 for 10 pills. Fortunately, Manda is a small dog and takes 1/4 of a pill twice daily.

Unfortunately, she’s not tolerating this pill well either. I can assure you, if the veterinarian doesn’t have her next med in stock, we’ll go to another pharmacy.

You’ve heart stories about all of the dogs I’ve loved. Most of you have heard about the dog mentioned in this blog. She’s my oldest dog, Manda and she is in declining health. She’s the little fluffy one in the pictures. She’s now 16 and has an enlarged heart, grade 6/6 murmur, a collapsing trachea, elevated liver and kidney values. She still eats, drinks, greets us with a spin and a wag, plays and is alert even with diminished vision and hearing.

He loves to play and is always in a great mood. He wakes up and wants to cuddle. Then he is ready to start his day with breakfast, exercise and play.

He knows how to appreciate the simple things in life. He claims caterpillars and flies as playmates. He loves a good romp with neighboring cats and dogs. He enjoys running through the snow, tip toeing through puddles and chasing a blowing leaf in the wind.

He truly embraces every moment. He takes long naps, enjoys treats, never misses the opportunity to meet someone new. Ned lives life to the fullest.

Ned reminds me it is the simple things that are so important.

Candy, Nuts – be careful not to leave a dish of nuts or candy within reach. It may not be life threatening…but it can give your dog an upset stomach and you a mess to clean up.

Chocolate – it can be fatal, it can cause illness. It depends on the kind of chocolate, how much is consumed and the size of your dog. The most toxic kinds of chocolate are baker’s chocolate which is the pure unsweetened chocolate or cocoa powder, dark chocolate, high quality gourmet chocolate and baked goods and candies containing these items. The toxic ingredient in chocolate is called THEOBROMINE.

For milk chocolate, one ounce per pound of body weight is toxic. For pur dark chocolate, it only takes a tenth of an ounce per pound of body weight to cause a health hazard.

Christmas Trees have a lot of hazards especially for curious dogs or puppies. One concern is the dog or puppy can cause the tree to fall by trying to pull something off of the tree or chew a branch. The list goes on and on….ornaments, branches, broken glass in the floor or mouth, shock or fire from chewing or biting a lighted cord, tinsil being consumed. The best way to keep the dog in your life safe is to keep the tree behind a baby/puppy gate or to keep the dog out of the room where the tree is displayed unless supervised.

There are LOTS of plants that can cause your dog to become ill or even be fatal. A few popular ones are: Mistletoe, Eucalyptus, Holly and Poinsettia. Be sure to research the plant. For a complete list visit the following websites:

Is it a couple? Is it parents and their children? Is it a group of folks who are involved in each others lives and care about each other whether dwelling together or not? Is it a group of persons related by blood? Is it a group of people living under the same roof? Is it a group of folks who share common attitudes, interests and goals and invest into each others lives?

Whatever your definition, mine includes my dogs. My dogs look at me with more love than anyone else on some days. My dogs are always in a great mood, always thrilled to see me and are extremely devoted.

They shower me with unconditional love. They never ask for anything in return. It’s pure, unselfish, unmanipulative love.

I show my dogs love daily. I give them the best care possible daily. They are an important part of my live. How could I not include them in my family?

If you’ve ever ran across a truly bad veterinarian, I’d love to hear warning signs that your intuition told you if only you would have listened!

I don’t mean…did you have a bad experience. I mean is there a bad veterinarian??
Everyone is going to have an off day now and then. Every veterinarian is going to get behind, say the wrong thing, have a regret and even make a mistake sometimes.

Warning signs that you’ve really encountered a BAD veterinarian:
1) New STAFF members EVERY time you call
2) New STAFF members EVERY time you visit
3) Unprofessional Veterinarian
4) Unprofessional Staff

If the clinic is a revolving door for staff, why?

If the clinic is in an area where there’s a School of Veterinary Medicine, then…okay….possibly there’s STUDENTS revolving in and out. But…that shouldn’t be the entire staff.

Does the STAFF see something “behind the scenes” that is offensive, heartbreaking and repulsive?

Does the STAFF have to compromise their values to stay?

Is the Veterinarian unprofessional? Don’t they care about their appearance? If they are sloppy, wrinkled and wearing sweatpants….do I really want to trust her/him with my dog?

Is the staff unprofessional? If I can’t be treated professionaly while I’m there, how is my dog going to be treated when I walk out the door?

What if our dogs were talking and you could see their teeth with every word? Would you take better care of them?

It’s up to you to help your dog. You’ve been entrusted their life and you want to do the best you can.

We need to brush their teeth daily. Never use human toothpaste. Dogs can’t spit it out so they swallow it and get sick. Buy toothpaste specifically for your dog from your veterinarian or local pet store. I buy CHICKEN flavored toothpaste and it makes brushing teeth fun, at least for one of my dogs.

My other dog won’t let me touch her mouth. I didn’t start it when I got her due to lack of knowledge. She’s had several dental. She now has heart disease and can’t have additional dentals. Her teeth are getting really bad. I purchased a dental aide to squirt in her mouth and a naturopathic product to rub on her teeth. Both are still hard to do and usually result in coughing episode. Needless to say, it doesn’t get done like it should.

If your veterinarian recommends a dental, it most likely needs done. If you don’t feel certain and can’t see the obvious things the veterinarian shows you, get a second opinion. Unfortunately, there’s the occasional BAD veterinarian in this world.

Dental problems can lead to pain, tooth loss, difficulty eating, bad breath and even the spread of infection throughout the body.

Dogs don’t get their teeth cleaned as simply as we do. To clean their teeth, the veterinarian must do pre-testing to be sure pet is healthy enough, monitoring equipment and use general anesthesia. Extractions may be necessary and they usually can’t tell you that until during the procedure when they have a full view of everything in the dogs mouth.

After your pets teeth are cleaned, try to stay on top of the brushing to lengthen the time before the next dental cleaning is necessary.

Nobody likes to go to the doctor including dogs. My senior citizens must have routine examinations. They are aging on an accelerated rate and should be checked by the veterinarian every six months. This will help you become aware of and treat any diseases such as diabetes, kitney failure, arthritis, dental disease and cancer. Some of these problems can be diagnosed and treated before it becomes too difficult to manage. This can extend the quality of life and the life of your pet.

During the “geriatric exam”, the veterinarian or staff will ask you about any changes. This is where paying attention to little things is very important. Since dogs can’t tell us their symptoms, we must make notes of any changes in their daily routines. A change in appetite, thirst, urination or behavior (to name a few) could be warning signs of a potential illness.

We can’t stop the aging process but we can do everything possible to help our pets live healthy, happy and as long of a life as possible.

It’s fun to see others WIN, others SMILE and everyone have a great time. My favorite part is when Bob Barker has a dog on that needs a home. Those trusting eyes are always from a nearby shelter. I admire Bob Barker because he uses his public platform to get his personal opinion, something he’s obviously passionate about, across to millions…..Have Your Pet SPAYED or NEUTERED.

I wish more people would speak up about the issue of unwanted, abandoned pets and the euthanasia of healthy pets. These loving creatures deserve so much more. Yet, there are people who never take responibility for their own pets and the results are unwanted pets. They don’t invest the the life of their pet to have it spayed or neutered. What’s their mindset? I don’t get it!

Okay…after hearing Bob Barker for years….How does anyone MESS UP the pronounciation of the word SPAYED?? It is not “spaded”. I just don’t get it!

I didn’t plan on having three dogs. Russ came into my life when he was 3 years old. My husband rescued him and Russ and I developed a special bond. Russ went to heaven when he was only 8 years old because of a brain tumor. It has been one year and we still miss him terribly.

So, today, we have TWO dogs. Manda, the oldest is 16 years old. Ned, the baby is now 10 1/2 years old. They are incredible companions. Ned is 55# and we rescued him when he was a puppy. Manda is 10# and is in charge.

The love from dogs makes all the work and expense worthwhile. There’s nothing like being greeted by the dogs.

I can’t imagine ever loving again but I also can’t imagine life without dogs. They add so much to my life everyday.

Ned talk too. I just wish I could understand him. He has a different tonality with different folks. When DAD comes home, it is pure joy. He is so happy talking, wagging and running. When he sees PAPA, it is a loud and long playful howl. I believe he thinks PAPA is a big toy.

Ned says a lot with his body language, his posture and the way he holds his head, ears, and the different positions he holds. He also seems to love to bark.

He celebrates ARRIVALS. If it is someone he knows, he has a playful bark. If the doorbell wakes him up, he has an angry bark. If he doesn’t know the person arriving, he has a very serious tone and cautious bark which frightens most people.

Sometimes it is a demanding bark with an urgent need to go outside or a gentle bark asking to play. Sometimes it is a sad cry of a bark as we leave him home alone. Sometimes it is a whine to say…hey…did you forget about me?

The strangest thing for me to observe has been her letting go of her dominant position. She no longer insists on laying in the highest possible place in the house. Maybe it is because she isn’t as agile as she once was. She no longer holds her ears and tail UP all the time. Her eyesight & hearing is failing so she doesn’t have that confident gaze.

I had to start feeding the dogs in separate rooms or in travel kennels because Manda decided she would walk away from her food. She had never done that before but now, Ned can look at her and she’ll walk away.

Ned still begs Manda to play with him. He approaches her with his tail up, front legs on the ground and barks playfully. Most of the time she turns him down. Occasionally, she’ll grab his toy and run.

Being prepared in case of emergency can save your dog’s life.

Add the appropriate items to your (HUMAN) first-aid kit to serve both human and dog members of your family.

• Penlight flashlight

• Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (70%)

My dogs are treated better and taken better care of than a lot of human kids.

I make hotel arrangements in advance if the dogs are traveling with us. There’s a few national chains which are becoming more and more dog friendly. Face it, if you are traveling with your dog, it is likely your dog is a member of your family and will be well behaved.

Keep a health certificate with you, photo of your pet and vaccination records. Be sure vaccination records are current or you have a tither showing it isn’t necessary. If you are leaving the US, be sure to check into what paperwork will be necessary.

Okay, after you have the accomodations and paperwork completed, now you need the essentials for comfort. Pack your pets normal food, water, medications, bowls, blankets, leashes, pooper-scooper and plastic bags. Also, pack paper towels or wet wipes and then maybe you won’t need them. Other good ideas would be: a first aid kit, grooming tools and a couple favorite toys.

I plan everything around their lives. They get breakfast first. They get their needs met first. If I can’t be home to let them out, I make sure their grandparents or dog sitter can be there for them. They typically travel with us when we go away so the calendar is planned with dogs or with grandparents or a dog sitter.

I throw them treats so I can have an uninterrupted phone conversation. I share my healthy snacks with them.

When I sit and think about how my life revolves around my dogs, it’s a little scary.

We lived in a house with sliding glass doors leading to a patio and backyard. It was simple to teach him to go to the backdoor and knock when he wanted out. It worked great until we moved.

Today, we live in a house with all wooden doors. There’s no glass. What does Ned do? He goes to the backdoor leading to the deck and knocks.

So, we continually touch up the door. I’ve tried re-training but haven’t had much success.

Here’s some things you should have ready for your best friend in case of an emergency.

TIPS:
1) Be organized. Have everything necessary in one location. It should be packed in a container that is easy to transport.

2) Create an “All About ME” folder for your dog. (Be sure to create ONE folder per dog) This folder should contain medical records, a current photo of your dog, a description of your dog, basic information about your dog, any medical conditions, behavior problems, and the name and number of your veterinarian. Be sure to include any information that would help a foster parent or shelter care for your dog if you had to be separated. Also, include information that could help you find each other and prove ownership if you got separated during a disaster.

3) Medications, First Aid Kit and Doggy First Aid Book.

4) Leashes and harnesses for your dog.

5) One properly sized carrier for each of your dogs. (Securely attach an extra copy of a recent photo and basic information about your dog to the carrier)

6) Blankets, Towels, (Pet Bed if you can take it)

7) Dry and Canned Food (in portable container)and Water, bowls, manual can opener
A few favorite toys to help reduce stress.

9) Other helpful items: papertowels, plastic trash bags, grooming items and household bleach.

She has shown me how important it is to sometimes be demanding and persistant. It’s not a characteristic she has ever abused. There’s just times that Manda is insistant on her own way, nothing else matters and there’s no other options. She has shown me this over and over again and I attempt to realize it.

Manda has also shown me great loyalty and friendship. She always chooses me. Manda acts like I am really somebody everytime I walk into a room. She never brushes me off because she is pre-occupied with other things.

She has shown me that having an attitude and opinion about certain things is okay. Manda is consistently true to herself.

She knows she is adored and loved unconditionally.

The human animal bond is incredible. As I feel pain, I sware I’ll never love again. Even though she’s 15 1/5 years old, I’m still not ready to let her go.

We are hopeful she’ll respond well and be able to continue enjoying life for a while longer.

Today, she’s bright, alert and perky. She still has a decreased appetite but will eat a little just to please me. She’s been bouncing around and playing.

After her buddy Russ went to heaven in July 2005, Manda has grieved, missed him terribly and her health has declined. There’s been a lot of little changes. She went to the doctor in August and had some testing done. There really wasn’t anything abnormal, her heart murmur was bad but she was asymptomatic. A few weeks ago, she began coughing at night and with any exercise or stress and has on and off lethargy.

She went to the doctor on Thursday and had testing done. She had to start 1 (12.5 mg) Furosemide twice daily and 1/2 (5 mg) Enalapril once daily. Her heart murmur is worse.

She’s only been on the medications a few days and there are already significant changes. The doctor said she’d drink more and urinate more. Both of which she is doing. She’s also choosing to sleep on the coldest floor she can find, hiding under tables and chairs and even in a duffle bag, coughing less, has vomited a couple of times, has trembled like she is cold a few times, is sleeping more and has even cried a couple of times. I’m sure I’ll be discussing this with her doctor. I am able to get her to eat.

It’s so hard to see her decline. She’s not in heart failure but the meds sounds like my only choice.

She eats Blue Buffalo Senior Dog Food which is a premium food. I need to check on sodium content and see if there’s something with less.

The first thing he taught me was to value THINGS less.

I had several books which I read a lot. Russ destroyed them. One was a Bible in Chronological Order, one was The Message and the other was about Genetically Modified Foods. The first two became trash and I still treasure the last with chewed corners and pages.

I didn’t seem to catch my lesson from the books because I just brought more into the house. Russ chewed the corners off of the dining room table, a couple of the chairs, an antique table that was mine when I was a child and a matching china cabinet.

After that, we tried many different options available for “separation anxiety”. We rearranged our lives around him. We tried a variety of kennels to which he escaped and broke his teeth. We went through several sets of mini-blinds, three pair of prescription eye glasses and numerous remotes.

I learned how to love him unconditionally. I kept working with him and trying to make him feel secure.

Through my time with Russ, I also learned how great it is to receive the loyalty and unconditional love he freely gave.

I learned the importance of responding instead of reacting.

I also learned I like everything kept simple.

I learned so many more numerous things from Russ. I’m thankful he was in my life even if only for a short while.

Manda quickly showed him the ropes. She helped make sure he knew to go outside to go potty. She told him she was the boss and everyone had to listen to her. Russ was a wise old man. He caught on quickly and knew he wanted her as his best buddy. He happily let her groom his face, ears and cuddle close to him. Soon, they were inseparable. They would always be found sharing a bed, couch or even a small chair together.

Ned liked having a playmate. Ned shared almost all of his toys and expected Russ to do the same. They would switch new toys back and forth even if they were exactly alike. Afterall, the other toy always seems to look better than theirs. Ned wouldn’t share his spot in the bed and was happy Russ and Manda wanted to sleep together nearby.

Manda learned from Russ that he moved slower than Ned. Manda learned from Russ that she could throw her body down instead of gently laying down. She has failing eyesight and hearing and really depended on Russ to be her ears and eyes. She moved when he moved. She came to the door when he did. She came to dinner when he did. I didn’t realize that she was simply following his lead until he was gone. The first day he was gone, we come home and we couldn’t find Manda. We are searching the house and all of their favorite places. We finally find her (in a place she had never slept before) on the bathroom floor. She was not responding to our voices. I looked closely to see if she was breathing. She finally woke up and was so embarrassed.

Ned learned from Russ that there was stuff on the counters and counter surfing was a great thing to do….but only with the parents were gone. Ned didn’t quiet catch the only when the parents were gone part and would counter surf in our presence. It wasn’t a fun game but after Ned learned it, they both would try it at any given opportunity. Ned also learned a new way to lay on the chair and couch. This kept his head up so he could miss out on less.

Russ learned how to be unconditionally loved, how to be part of a family and how to climb up onto a couch, chair and bed. For the first two weeks as our boy, he slept on the floor staring at the other dogs as they climbed on and off furniture. I’ll never forget the first time he climbed onto the couch. His legs were shaking as he climbed up and settled in on the couch. After that, he loved the furniture and would rarely be caught laying on the floor.

I love all three of them very much. Russ went to heaven in July 2005 and life just isn’t the same without him.

I talk to Manda and Ned about their meals, their treats, playing, walking and all the other typical things in a day. I even tell them when I’m leaving and what time I’ll be back. I did all of that with Russ too. I didn’t realize how much more I talked to him until after he was gone. He was a wise old soul and I shared my thoughts, joy and grief. He was a great listener and seemed to enjoy his position of having such wisdom. The unusual thing to me is that I didn’t know that I conversed with him so much. I sure do miss it now.

Daddy, Manda and Ned all miss Russ too. Life is not the same for any of us without Russ around. He and Manda slept together, cuddled together and were best buddies. Ned and Russ were playmates and competitive with each other. Manda is the boss of the entire family. Ned looked for Russ in all of their favorite places for a couple of days. Manda still has never got over the loss of her best friend. She depended on him a lot more than we knew.

Russ was high maintenance but worth it. We tried to change his name to TIMEX after he came into our lives. He added some discipline and structure to our lives and we added some spontaniety and flexibility to his.

Russ had separation anxiety and it took great measures to comfort him while we were away. The KONG toy, the CUBE and homemade treats became our favorite toys. A kennel didn’t work for Russ. We tried several and he managed to escape each one and break teeth trying.

Russ was a beautiful greyhound who came into our lives in 1999 and left in 2005. We only had a short time with him and we each learned so much from him. I’ll share life lessons soon.
